Massasoit The side panels on each side of this journal page are dedicated to Massasoit, leader of the Wampanoag People Massasoit was the leader of the Wampanoag. Though he is not mentioned by name in any English accounts prior to 1621, he and his brother Quadequina are undoubtedly the "two Kings, attended with a guard of fiftie armed men" that met Captain Thomas Dermer at Pokanoket in May 1619, when he was returning Tisquantum ("Squanto") to his homeland. On March 22, 1620/1, Massasoit decided to pay a visit to the Plantation at the invitation of Tisquantum who had first visited with the Pilgrims shortly before. In an almost identical scenerio as that of Thomas Dermer a year earlier, he and his brother along with 60 armed men came and stood at the top of the hill overlooking the Colony. Edward Winslow was sent to him with some knives and a copper jewel chain as gifts--and Massasoit was told that the Pilgrims only desired peace and trading. Massasoit was told that King James of England saluted him with love and peace, and accepted him as a friend and ally. Massasoit liked what he heard, because the English would make powerful allies against his enemies in the region. The Pilgrims wanted a peace treaty, and so he willingly undertook the negotiations. At the peace negotiation, he was met at the river by Captain Myles Standish and William Brewster. They saluted one another and he was taken to William Bradford's house for the negotiations with Governor John Carver. Massasoit was given some liquor, fresh meat, and some biscuits. For the peace treaty he agreed that none of his Indians would harm the Pilgrims--and if they did he would send them to the Pilgrims for punishment. And if anyone did unjust war against them, or against the Pilgrims, they would come to each other's aid. They also agreed that when trading, the Indians would not bring their bows and arrows and the Pilgrims would not bring their guns. After meeting in the Pilgrim village, Massasoit then invited a Pilgrim delegation to meet him at their place. Myles Standish and Isaac Allerton volunteered for the adventure. Massasoit gave to them ground nuts and tobacco as gifts when they arrived, and Standish and Allerton presented him with a kettle of peas. A second trip to Pokanoket, where Massasoit lived, was made by the Pilgrims, so that they could learn more about their neighbors and to make some additions to their treaty. This time, Edward Winslow and Stephen Hopkins were chosen to make the trip. Massasoit came out to see them when they arrived at the end of their several-days journey. They reaffirmed their peace with one another, and Massasoit agreed to tell his Indians to stop making random visits to Plymouth looking for food and entertainment; and he also agreed to send a messenger to contact the Indians of which the Pilgrims took corn from upon their first arrival--since they had thus far not been able to repay them. In early 1622, Massasoit discovered from Hobomok's wife that Tisquantum had been plotting to take away some of his power and trick the Pilgrims into believing him not faithful in his peace with them. So under the Treaty, Massasoit demanded that Tisquantum be turned over to him for execution. When Governor Bradford would not consent, saying that they needed Tisquantum despite his treasonous behavior, Massasoit became enraged and stopped sending messengers and gifts to the Plymouth colony. Squanto's death in November, 1622 alleviated much of the tension and relations stabilized--through there was trouble brewing in Thomas Weston's Wessagusett Colony. In March 1623, Massasoit became extremely ill, and when word came to Plymouth, Edward Winslow made a trip to Pokanoket to visit him, guided by Hobomok. When they arrived in Namasket, they were informed that Massasoit had already died. They proceeded to Corbitant's house, and there sent a messenger to Pokanoket who returned saying Massasoit was not dead yet, so they continued on. They found Massasoit in his house, full of many visitors. Massasoit was now blind, but could still understand--when they told him the English had come to visit him, he asked "Keen Winslow?" which means "Are you Winslow?" Then he said, "Matta neen wonckanet namen, Winslow!", which means "O Winslow, I shall never see you again." Winslow gave him a little bit of medicine, and scraped out the inside of his mouth which had swollen up preventing him from eating or drinking anything. Then he gave Massasoit some water and more medicine. In about half an hour, Massasoit had regained his eye sight and was getting better. Winslow made a chicken broth soup for Massasoit, and within a couple days Massasoit had his appetite back, and eventually recovered. Massasoit then revealed to the Pilgrims a conspiracy plot by the Massachusetts Indians to attack them and the Wessagusett Colony, and the Pilgrims led by Myles Standish, with the help of some of Massasoit's warriors, defeated the plot before it could materialize. By 1632, Massasoit had changed his name to Owsamequen (sometimes spelled Woosamequen)--changing names was common among the Wampanoag. Massasoit lived a long life, and remained a close friend and ally of the Plymouth Colony, until his death around 1656. For more, |
FRIDAY
– NOVEMBER
3, 2000
I went down to the St. Louis Center Mall and did some shopping today. I found a “fake” leather jacket for just $15! Well... the madness of
voting in is full swing today. This is a VERY close election between
Bush and Gore. I haven’t been
keeping my diary up to date ever since I got mugged on Friday, October
13th. I’ve been very busy of late. I have a new digital camera, and a new printer (which also functions as a copier, color copier, fax, and scanner. Anyway, I am trying to get caught up! I was invited by Terry last night to go to Chicago with him this weekend. I’ve asked Jack & Adam if the can walk Kira for me. They agreed, but I am still not sure if I am going. Terry was very insistent that it would be fun and that I would be welcome. But he had a few drinks in him... he may change his mind. I still haven’t packed, but it looks like I am going to be going to Chicago with Terry tonight. We leave at 8pm, but I am not sure if that’s the flight time, or when he plans on leave HOME. I finally got my November theme designed (minimally) and uploaded (a week late). I need to get started early for my December theme! Well... plans changed. I am not going to leave for Chicago tonight. The trip has been postponed until tomorrow at 2pm. So I went out tonight and partied a little. I went back over to Terry’s and crashed for the evening, but the train was so crowded I couldn’t get off at my stop! I had to get off at LaClede’s Landing and walk to Terry’s. When I got there, he was on the internet and I couldn’t buzz him to let me in; so I just “snuck” in behind someone else who was entering. Terry was getting ready to go back out... but I was tired, so I just curled up on his sofa and went to sleep while he went out partying. I must be getting old! Well... I finally left Terry’s at about 9:30 this morning. I still didn’t get that CD from him (the drivers for the printer I bought from him). Well... we cancelled the trip to Chicago entirely. Maybe later. SUNDAY
– NOVEMBER
12, 2000 I sat here at home in front of the computer all day yesterday. I must not do that again to day (though here I am at 8:30am). Tomorrow I have to remember to go to work early. I have to take the TB test. It’s between 8:00 and 9:00... I hope I don’t forget! I went to watch the Val Kilmer movie, “Red Planet,” today. It had bad reviews, but it wasn’t NEARLY as bad as the reviews suggested!! I got Adam some bath salts, a silver piggy bank and some tangerine glycerin soap for his birthday. We all played a game of scrabble last night. I lost miserably.... I kept getting THE worst letters. Mostly E’s and I’s! I set my alarm last night, but just couldn’t get up to go in early! I MAY still be able to make it... but doubtful (re getting that TB test). I went out for cocktails with Terry & Theresa tonight. They both came over for a brief moment this evening. I loaned Terry some money (against my better judgment). That night he got mugged! He was assaulted by a guy with a knife who demanded all his money. Well... he only lost his wallet (+ contents) and $20. The assailant got away, but he dropped his knife!
Jack made me very upset tonight, referring to Terry & Theresa as my “drunken friends.” I won’t go into it.... I was going to do laundry tonight, but the washing machine in the basement was full of water and apparently NOT working!! I have to go to work early tomorrow. I attend a class all day today. Called “Service Plus.” It was fairly decent. I didn’t necessarily LEARN anything new, but I confirmed that what I am currently doing with customers is “good.” I went down to Nik’s, the small club downstairs, and had dinner with (of all things) a couple of martini’s. Met the older gentleman there named Larry. Larry builds tennis courts (including the ones next to our apartments). He has traveled all over the world (45 countries) and was fascinating to talk to. Fairly typical day. I cooked this evening. I made 2 meals. For this evening I made chicken & dumplings. I used dough for the dumplings that I had made in Florida and kept in the freezer for all this time. Probably 7-8 months! Well, it didn’t come out so well. I scorched it just slightly, plus the dough didn’t taste very good. And the dumplings cam out tough. The other dish is for tomorrow night. I put three turkey drumsticks in the crock-pot to cook over night. Mmmm! It smells so good in the house.... those turkey drumsticks are so aromatic! We get overtime checks today. That’s good.... I always welcome more incoming funds!! I splurged and purchased Jasc’s Paint Shop Pro 7.0. I have been using the program since version 1.0.... I have always loved it. I keep on saying I am going to purchase it and be a “legitimate” user... I finally did! I basically wasted a good Saturday. I played around on the computer all day. I did enter a contest with www.jasc.com. The grand prize is $3000, but I didn’t know it when got into the contest... I just did it for fun. This is and art contest. Jasc provides 2 photos. You choose one of them and let your creativity go wild. I chose the “old barn in Minnesota” picture. I tried to make it look about 40 years newer, then made it look like an old photo of the same barn 40 years earlier. I even added a old ‘57 Chevy. I add trees & clouds, change the apparent time of day (with a sunburst effect), removed a telephone pole and a road sign... etc. It was fun. Went to see Jim Carey’s “The Grinch” down at Union Station today (It came out this past week). Loved it... he was perfect for the part!!
Today was fairly typical... but hectic. Lisa had personal problems at home and had to leave. She never made it back, so that was stressful! Oh, I remembered to go in early this morning and get the TB test. I have to go back on Wednesday Nothing special happened today. Went to a Applix meeting by myself today. This evening I did some laundry (bed clothes & towels... big whoopee!). Took my vitamins and went to bed early. I learned about the Citrix Server at work today. It is a fantastic idea! I got off work early and was allowed to take the software home to load on my own PC. It allows me to access nearly everything that I can access at work, including the NT Server and the VMS system. Well, anyway, I am all excited about it! Went out for a few drinks tonight, then had dinner at Hooter’s... wings of course. I was thinking about going to watch Bruce Willis’ new movie “Unbreakable.” Well... this was a Thanksgiving I won’t forget! Unfortunately, it was something of a fiasco. Jack and Adam have been going to a nearby Best Western for the past three years for Thanksgiving dinner. We agreed that we would all do this again this year. So, about 10:30 this morning we walked to the Best Western... only to learn that they are NOT serving Thanksgiving dinner this year! So we started walking further down Lindell street... then decided to turn around and go back to the Chase Hotel. They were closed. So we walked to several other places and finally caught the train and went down to Union Station. Hard Rock Café was open, but they were serving the homeless; we didn’t feel right there. There was a place open upstairs in Union Station, but they were charging over $40 per person! We didn’t feel right there either. Otherwise, everything was closed. We finally went to the food court and found 2 places open. One was a hotdog/hamburger stand. We chose the other, which was a New Orleans style Cajun fast food place. I had catfish (very greasy) and popcorn shrimp (more like shrimp flavored balls of batter), some red beans & rice and a kielbasa. Oh, well. At least we had food and were among friends. Then we decided to go to a movie (actually, this had already been decided before leaving home). I wanted to go see Bruce Willis’ new movie, “Unbreakable,” but Jack & Adam are somewhat disdainful of such movies, so we went to the Tivoli.... an old, but very will maintained theatre in University City (which is in walking distance from home). It is a BEAUTIFUL theatre... very artistically designed. The movie was entitled, “Aimeé & Jäguar.” I was entirely in German (with subtitles) and was about two Lesbians during the end of World War II. One was a Jew and the other was married to a Nazi officer (Gunther). I was doubtful, but it was actually a fairly interesting movie. But I still want to see “Unbreakable” ! Well, this was a long
day. I went to work at 6:00am and was supposed to stay till 6:00pm...
but Laura (my Director) said we could leave at 5pm. Still, it was a
long boring day. Only took about 5 or 6 calls all day. SATURDAY
– NOVEMBER
25, 2000 I called and wished my
niece a happy birthday. Spoke with both of my sisters and 3 of my nieces.
The chuck roast came out good. I also cooked some dinner rolls. I went to the Galleria Mall tonight with Jack & Adam. They have this ice cream Shoppe that is just FAN-tastic. We all got some ice cream... well, Adam got yogurt. Jack got a new scarf; he borrowed the money from me. That’s a good sign. I am doing well enough now to loan money instead of borrow! I was mostly in a bad mood all due to a little domestic dispute. I took Kira for a walk in the park. Then went to a movie... I was going to watch Arnold Schwarzenegger’s new movie, “Sixth Day.” But I changed my mind in line and watched Adam Sandler’s, “Little Nicky” instead. It had terrible reviews, but I thought it was amusing. No masterpiece, but entertaining.
Then I went over to Hooters and had some beer and wings. I came home, fixed a bite to eat and went to bed early; about 8:30! Well, today I learned that my home computer is infected with the VSB_KAKWORM worm/virus. I was able to clean it up, but it had to be done manually. But its ok now. That was my excitement for the day! TUESDAY
– NOVEMBER
28, 2000 Except for being my sister’s 40th birthday (OMG!) today was fairly mundane. I had a schedule of things to do all planned out for the day... but didn’t get to accomplish any of them! My greatest achievement today was getting laundry done! Not too much happened today either. I loaded a program on my computer called BI/Query... but I will need help getting it set up to work. We also had Chinese food for lunch. Went out for a few drinks this evening. Picked up a Fajita Burrito from Tomatillo’s. What an exciting day! :-/ Well, today is payday! That should perk things up a little. I went shopping tonight.
I bought 4 pairs of pants, some socks & underwear, a new dress-belt
and a few other items. |
