DECEMBER
the Snow Moon
Usgiyi
or
Yuletide

The spirit being, "Snow Man", brings the cold and snow for the earth to cover the high places while the earth rests until the rebirth of the seasons in the Windy Moon Anuyi. Families traditionally were busy putting up and storing goods for the next cycle of seasons. Elders enjoyed teaching and retelling ancient stories of the people to the young.

FRIDAY - DECEMBER 1, 2000

Jason Barnett is supposed to come to my office to help me configure BI/Query. This is the program that I will use to pull statistics from Applix (the Help Desk software).

I will be wearing some of my new clothes today.

SATURDAY - DECEMBER 2, 2000

I woke up to snow on the ground this morning. Kira didn’t know WHAT it was. I took some pictures. I am going to go down to LaClede’s Landing by the Arch and have breakfast on the River Queen with Terry this morning.
Well... I got that wrong... it’s the Casino Queen. Breakfast was nice. A big buffet. Then we went over to Terry’s apartment. He had new tile in his kitchen and bathroom and wanted me to take pictures of it for him. He also had, and did not want this little electronic game of “Jeopardy.”

First snow

I got the HP OfficeJet 700 CD from Terry today. I discovered that I had already loaded all the necessary drivers from the downloaded drivers I got off the internet a while back. I never even thought to test the other features of the printers (like scanning or copying). I scanned in a picture with it today.

Kira sees snow for the first time

I took the Jeopardy game with me and went to do Talayna’s for supper tonight. It was time to treat myself (or is it “subject myself”) to some hot wings and beer.

SUNDAY - DECEMBER 3, 2000

I went to see “Bedazzled” (Brendan Frazier) today. It was okay.... amusing. Then I went to Hooter’s and had some wings & beer. I was really looking forward to watching the new mini-series which was premiering tonight. Unfortunately, even thought it was advertised earlier today (on local channel 29), it did not come on! I was very disappointed. I’ve been waiting for this for several months.

Scenes from my trip today to Union Station

MONDAY - DECEMBER 4, 2000

Lisa Z. is getting a new car today and left at 10am.... boy was it hectic! Me and Tracy thought the telephone wasn’t going to stop ringing! After work I joined Terry for a few well deserved cocktails, then came home and walked Kira. I went down to Talayna’s for supper. I decided to try their Linguini & Clams... it was DElicious!! I brought half of it home with me.

Oh yes! We (that is, Ed B.) proclaimed today “Salmo Mixed-footwear Day” ... its a long story. I went around taking picture of peoples feet with mismatched shoes on. Like I said... it’s a long story!

Collage of MIXED FOOTWEAR!

TUESDAY - DECEMBER 5, 2000

Today was very productive. I got my call load at work down to just 7 items. It has been between 17 to 30 items for a couple of months. I’ve finally got it down. And on the home front, I got laundry done... so all-in-all this was a fairly productive day.

WEDNESDAY - DECEMBER 6, 2000

I went to take Kira for a walk this morning and to my surprise, everything was covered in snow again! I had “snow” idea it had snowed last night! Kira went out on the balcony and looked out across the world like she does every day, and headed toward the stairs. Then she turned and went back and looked again as though it had just dawned on her that something looked funny!

Nothing much happened at work today. I had my customary Wednesday night cocktails and then went to Talayna’s for supper. Tonight I tried their Seafood & Pasta. Again, I brought home over half of it. That will be my supper on Thursday night.

I called and talked with Calisa (my sister) a while tonight. She told me about my nieces winning a couple of places with their horses in the local parade... I forget the details. I will have to ask her again.

THURSDAY - DECEMBER 7, 2000

Well there is still snow on the ground, but not fresh.

Lisa will be in a training class today and tomorrow, so it will be stressful at work, I suspect. I will be going in early for some overtime tomorrow.

FRIDAY - DECEMBER 8, 2000

Didn’t do much today. Worked 10 hours, then went home, fixed something to eat and went to bed early.

SATURDAY - DECEMBER 9, 2000

The Christmas tree at the Galleria Mall

I went Christmas shopping today. I bought myself some more clothes. I bought two shirts and a sleeveless sweater. Also went to see the movie “Dungeons & Dragons.” It was pretty good. The special effects were great!

SUNDAY - DECEMBER 10, 2000

I went shopping first thing this morning. I got ingredients to make lasagna rollups for our Christmas luncheon tomorrow. Unfortunately, I bought Philadelphia cream cheese when I meant to get Ricotta cheese! Ooops!

This evening was fun. I attended the annual Zamenhofa Bankedo (Zamenhoff Banquet) and a landmark restaurant in St. Louis called “Bevo Mill.” It was a very nice affairs with about 20 Esperantists attending.

My first attendance of the annual Zamenhoff Banquet for the Esperanto Association of St. Louis The Loation ... "Bevo Mill" in St. Louis Me sitting with other members Duncan doing his annual impression of "Esperanto Around the World" ... very funny! Ron Glossup (center) and other members

MONDAY - DECEMBER 11, 2000

My first Christmas Luncheon with MIR

This was a busy day at work. And we had our Christmas luncheon today too. This evening it got very cold (at least 13 deg). I went to catch the train home... I was trying to catch the 6:03. I missed it by just a few seconds... watched it pull out as ran down the steps at the depot. Oh, well, I thought, I will just wait for the 6:18 train. It will be cold, but I will survive. IT WAS COLD!! I had ice forming in my mustache! And the the 6:18 (for the first time I know of) DID NOT RUN!! I waited in the freezing cold for just over a half hour! Then... no, I’m not done.... the train had no heat! So I didn’t really warm up on my short 3 minute ride to Forest Part station. Then I had to walk home in the cold and the wind was blowing VERY hard! There is a tree limb fallen in our driveway.... a BIG one. It would have killed or maimed someone if it had hit them. So finally I got home.... is it over? No... now I have to walk Kira. I took a wool blanket with me (in addition to my coat, sweater, and long sleeved shirt. But, there still more! The maintenance people came to change the filters in the heating system today and did not put the unit back together right. I noticed it was cold in my room and kept feeling a draft. About 2:00 o’clock in the morning, Jack discovered the problem with the heating unit and fixed it. Finally it warmed up some.

TUESDAY - DECEMBER 12, 2000

Today was fairly mundane.... but very cold 9 degrees at 8:53 this morning. I have been in contact with Colleen Wingate; have been chatting via AIM. Colleen is wife to Joe Frank Wingate. Joe Frank was named after my father, Frank Lewis. Joe Frank’s father is my Uncle Jessie; my father’s brother. Colleen has been doing a lot of genealogy research... that’s how she found me! She has a lot of information about my Dad’s side of the family. It is very exciting.

Oh... the tree limb I mentioned yesterday that was blown down? Well, I tried to figure out what tree it blew from, but it was to big to have blown from any nearby tree unless we had a small tornado touch down! Then I figured it out... it WAS a tree! I realized it was a small tree that had just snapped at the roots and had blown over.

WEDNESDAY - DECEMBER 13, 2000

It started snowing about 6:00 am and there is already about 4 inches of the white stuff!

Got off work early (3pm). Snow has been falling all day... its nearly a foot deep. Went to Talayna’s with Jack & Adam for supper.

THURSDAY - DECEMBER 14, 2000

Still snowing!

FRIDAY - DECEMBER 15, 2000

It was not snowing today, but I was allowed to leave work early again due to the bad weather. And for the second time, I was the one who left the voice message for people who call in to the Help Desk. But this time I got talked into doing it in an English accent! I don’t know why I did that... I felt so stupid. My supervisor thought it was great... but turned so red I started sweating! (I was kind of funny though).

Got my overtime check today.

Surprise! I got a call from my cousin Joe Frank tonight! I haven’t seen him since roughly 1973!

OLD DIARY 1996: I miss Doug. Jack is supposed to be here about the 24th. I have been communicating with him via email. I am llewis@ci.orlando.fl.us. I am really missing Doug.

SATURDAY - DECEMBER 16, 2000

Last week I bought 2 shirts at Famous-Barr. Both were 17½ neck and 32-33 sleeves. One fit perfectly... but the other one’s sleeves were about 3 inches too short! ...so today I took it back and exchanged it. Also got another one. I sure hope these fit! (Nope... haven’t tried them on yet).

SUNDAY - DECEMBER ,17 2000
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO
GLENYS CHEW
OVER IN ENGLAND!

Grace Ann Chewing leaves Orlando City Hall for medical reasons... (the Mayor was sick of her! ) LOL!!

Didn’t do too much today. Helped Adam wrap some Christmas gifts... actually I just watched. I went to Union Station and looked around for a birthday gift for Jack, but still haven’t found anything. I bought myself a couple of small earrings... haven’t done that in a long time. Then I went to watch a movie: “What Women Want” (Mel Gibson). It was okay. It got a little tedious/boring at times. It had some funny spots; but it got a bit too romantic for my taste.

Snow is still on the ground. I’ve seen some places where its pile up 4 or 5 feet high. Icicles are hanging off the side of our building. A couple of days ago I took Kira outside and the back steps were coated with ice.

She slipped and basically slid down the first flight of steps (we are 3 stories up). She didn’t get hurt. I was going to carry bag of trash out and decided to drop it over the banister into a big fluffy looking pile of snow. I didn’t know the snow had a hard ice shell over it! The trash bag hit it and exploded like a shotgun! oops! Fortunately it was double bagged and did not make a mess!

MONDAY - DECEMBER ,18 2000

TUESDAY - DECEMBER 19, 2000

I was very sick today, but still went to work.

WEDNESDAY - DECEMBER 20, 2000

I feel SO much better today. Tracy was so nice... she took us out to lunch at “Silk Road” ... a very nice Chinese Restaurant. It is right next door to “Kirk’s” ... which is where Jack works.

THURSDAY - DECEMBER 21, 2000
HAPPY SOLTICE!

Today is Solstice! I think I will share my gifts with Jack & Adam today. Snow is on the ground still. Looks like I brought the cold weather with me to yet another state! My first year in Florida it snowed for the first time in 30 years! (1976).

I gave my gifts tonight. I gave Adam a 4-wick chestnut-aroma candle and a bronze candle holder/stand. To Jack I gave a “Starlight Globe” ... a world globe with all the oceans in black.

FRIDAY - DECEMBER 22, 2000

I went to work early today, but we got off work early too. Someone gave me a “gift from Santa”... I don’t know who. It was (of course) anonymous. It contained a denim shirt (which I am wearing this morning) and 3 pairs of socks (which I can really use!).

Jack opens his gift from me... a world gobe

This evening I went to Hooters and had some wings & beer, then went to watch another movie: Wes Craven’s “Dracula 2000” It was very good. I was impressed with how they managed to include details from Bram Stoker’s version of the story and yet change everything dramatically without ever actually contradicting the original story line. They even including answers as to why Dracula hates all things Christian and why silver is harmful to him. Also, they came up Dracula’s true identity (not Vlad Tepes); again, without contradicting the original story!

SATURDAY - DECEMBER 23, 2000

This evening Jack, Adam and I went to “The Magic Wok” where we pigged out on the usual fair, including steamed mussels (in a delicious sauce) and crab legs.

Scnes from our excursion down Euclid Avenue and the Magic Wok Restaurant...

SUNDAY - DECEMBER 24, 2000
HAPPY 38th BIRTHDADAY, JACK LaPLANTE !!!

I went down to Casa Gallardo this afternoon and had some chips and beer. I picked up a gift certificate for Jack’s birthday. Then, after picking up a birthday card, I went to watch another movie. This time it was “Cast Away” with Tom Hanks. Very good movie; very moving.

MONDAY - DECEMBER 25, 2000
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I am so glad its over. I sat around all day. Took a nap. Watched some TV (TNT was playing “A Christmas Story” ... over and over and over .... that’s all they played all day!). Munched on a couple of wraps. Finally... about 5:30, I went to a bar and had a few drinks. So glad this day is over!

TUESDAY - DECEMBER 26, 2000

Ahhh... back to normal... and a short week too (since I didn’t work yesterday). Payday is this Friday! That’s good. And I think it’s another 3 day weekend.

I didn’t feel well this morning. I ended up feeling worse as the day progressed and went home sick at 2:30. Fever... nausea... all the fun stuff.

WEDNESDAY - DECEMBER 27, 2000

I called in sick today. This is the first time I have missed a day since starting this job.

HAPPY 38th BIRTHDAY TO MY SISTER
CALISA SELFRIDGE!

I have gotten up this morning, but want to call in sick again. I feel terrible. I had a headache all night. I figured it was because it’s too hot & dry in the apartment. But after taking Kira for a walk this morning, I came back in and threw up! I feel horrible. I felt fine yesterday afternoon. Strange.

Well... I made it through the day. Lisa had to leave early, to just Gary and I worked until he left at 2:30. It was fairly quiet for the rest of the evening, thankfully.

I learned that Monday, the 18th, the little store downstairs was robbed at gun point. The Ethiopian girl, her name is Million, had gun stuck in her mouth and was given to the count of six to hand over money before they pulled the trigger. She waited till the count of five and grabbed the gun from the guy and hit him in the face with it! The gun fell to the floor and the bullets popped out! Wow.

FRIDAY - DECEMBER 29, 2000

Well, it was snowing again last night. I haven’t look outside yet... but I expect there will be another layer of snow. Not a lot... but “more.” I have about had my fill of snow... but we may not see grass again till February... or even April!

Today is payday! Always a good thing!

I went to Office Depot at lunch today and bought myself a CORDLESS mouse! I’ve been wanting one ever since I work for the City Attorney of DeLand, FL. All their machines had them. They are handy. You don’t get the cord tangled in everything. You can walk across the room with it if need be (doesn’t work very well over there though).

OH! Ken sent me more pictures from the family albums! Great! Love it!

Well... Debie will be working this weekend, so I have 3 days off!

I went over to Terry’s apartment tonight. I bought bottle of Captain Morgan’s and ordered a pizza. We played around on the internet till about 2am then I crashed at his place....

SATURDAY - DECEMBER 30, 2000

... then came home around 9:30 this morning. It’s 14° out today. Everything is still covered in snow! Yuck. I am OVER the snow and the cold! COME ON, SPRING!!

I thought I was going to go to the Galleria Mall and watch a movie today, but I didn’t. Instead I finally went down to Union Station. I bought 3 new ties on sale. Then I went to Casa Gallardo for some chip & dip & beer. They were so crowded, I left and went upstairs to Hooter’s. But THEY were so crowded I could even get in! So... I went back down to Casa G. and found a spot at the bar. Also order the chicken fingers (buffalo style). There were delicious... I must get them again. And now the strange part... I actually watch some football! ...and if you know me, you know how much I hate football!

SUNDAY - DECEMBER 31, 2000

Well... here we are. The last day of the year 2000!
