5:57am – I couldn’t
sleep. I start my first day of work at Washington University today.
I suffer the usual/normal excitement and anxiety. All the expected questions
are bouncing around in my head, “Have I made the right decision?”
“Will the people like me?” “Will I like them?”
“What will I be doing today?” ...
I also couldn’t sleep because when I woke up (again) at 5:45am
it was already light outside. Add to that the fact that I have about
15 mosquito bites! ...so I just made a pot of kafo and decided to ...
write this! Oh, and my alarm is set for 7:00am ... I don’t have
to be to work until 9:00am.
10:38 pm – Well...
the “first day” is over! It wasn’t too bad. I have
a lot to learn (as I expected), but I feel like I am “in my environment.”
Tracy is my supervisor - she’s really nice - shook treated me
to lunch today on the 17th floor of “Queeny Tower” (I think
that’s what it was called). The restaurant has a wonderful view
overlooking Forrest Park. They issued me a pager, too. That’s
good. I feel like the “old me” is coming back!
11:11 pm – I purchased
a MetroLink monthly pass today. I will purchase one more for September,
then I am going to join a payroll deduction program that will cover
a quarterly pass. That will simplify my transportation needs.
Old Diary - 1995:
7:30pm – Hurricane Erin is headed straight toward central FL. Might
be bad.
WEDNESDAY
- AUGUST 2, 2000
I was so upset
with myself this morning! I got off the train and was walking to the
off when I suddenly realized I was missing something.... MY FOLDER.
I have (had) a City of Orlando blue leather tri-fold folder which was
awarded to my in 1995 (?) when I received the “Employee of the
Quarter” award with the City of Orlando. I realized that I had
left it sitting on the train. It had all my current papers of importance!
I came home last night and went shopping; came home and got all industrious
in the kitchen. I made some banana nut bread. I didn’t chop the
bananas very fine and I thought it was going to be a mistake. The bread
came out all banana-chunky... I WAS GREAT! The best banana nut bread
I ever tasted!
THURSDAY
- AUGUST 3, 2000
Today was pretty
bland. I got home and noticed my caller ID showed a call having come
in from Bi-State Development Agency... that would be the train station.
I HOPE they are calling to tell me they found my folder! I will have
to call them tomorrow since they were already closed by the time I got
a chance to call back. (I meant to call them from work today, but never
got around to it).
FRIDAY
- AUGUST 4, 2000
I attended my first
work related training session today. The topic was “Applix”
... this is the Help Desk software used by Wash U. We had a small “luau”
for lunch today immediately after the Applix course. I was supposed
to go to a short demo of “TeleRad” in the afternoon, but
Tracy and I got so wrapped up in training me on the IDXRad system that
I think we both must have forgotten. Also, I was supposed to go pick
up my last check from Spherion this afternoon -- Tracy offered to drive
me there to get it. Unfortunately, Spherion put my check in the mail!
SATURDAY
- AUGUST 5, 2000
BORING! I mostly
just sat here at my computer all day. I was overcast and drizzly out
side. I did go to the store this evening (around 4pm). Jack gave me
some money and I added some into it and got a couple of armloads of
groceries. I got some collard greens... I have been craving them, but
Jack doesn’t care for them and dislikes the smell when they are
cooking. I will try to wait till he is at work and open the back door
to the kitchen to keep the odor
SUNDAY
- AUGUST 6, 2000
I made a big ol’
vat of collard greens today with some pork, fresh garlic & onions,
and other seasonings. I waited till Jack went to work. He doesn’t
care for them... nor their smell. I crave them every now and again.
Mmmm! DE-LISH-US!
I took Kira for another
long walk and took my camera along. I was walking past Turvey’s
just a Jack got off duty.... amazing timing! I stopped him with a little
arm twisting, got him to hold Kira while I took a picture of him and
Kira in front of the “Turvey’s on the Green” sign.
I took Kira all the way
to the place I have started calling “Kira’s Glen”
where she went running after a squirrel (which of course was long gone
before she got near it). She went running around looking for more...
I swear she is not very alert for a dog. I saw squirrels all around
me and a rabbit went bouncing right in front of her and she never seemed
to see a one of them!
| On the way back she was
tired and hot... but she had the solution! She went into the lake for
a swim! I have had Kira for 7 years and I have never seen her swim.
I think her sire, who was supposed to be Chow, was likely a Chow/Lab
mix.... with a lot of Lab! I took pictures of her swimming. You will
probably be able to see them on her web site next month. I have been getting involved
in a role playing game on-line. I have never done this before and am
having a good time with it. It is kind of like story telling, but with
multiple people, all intertwining bits and pieces of the story. No one
knows for sure where it will go. |

You can see the story
for yourself at The Bloodwine Bar.
Oh, I forgot to mention....
3-4 days ago I began creating my “Autobiography” site. I
am trying to document my life on-line. It is quite a task! However,
since I don’t have children, I find it may be the only substantial
legacy I may be able to leave and take it quite seriously.
MONDAY
- AUGUST 7, 2000
I attended my orientation
with Wash U today.
TUESDAY
- AUGUST 8, 2000
I started answering the
phone finally today (at work that is).
WEDNESDAY
- AUGUST 9, 2000
I went to work early today
in order to attend a Lotus Notes class, but it turned out that the class
did not start until 1:00p! Well, that turned out to be a good thing.
It gave me extra time at lunch to go downtown (to the Convention Center)
where the MetroLink’s “lost & found” center is
located. I went down there and got my tri-fold folder back. I am I am
glad to report that everything appears to be still in it... including
my stamps!
SATURDAY
- AUGUST 12, 2000
I worked today from 8:00
to 5:00pm. I was only supposed to work till 4pm, but I got stuck and
didn’t get out when I meant to. I was all by myself all day. I
thought I was going to hate it... or at least that the day would drag
by... but it wasn’t so bad. I think I won’t mind doing this
on occasion.
Oh... Kira had an “accident” in the house tonight. This
was only the second time I can remember this happening in 7 years! I
knew she wanted to go outside, but I was doing something on the computer
and told her to wait a minute. She couldn’t wait. Boy was that
an unpleasant experience. (ugh!)
Old Diary – 1976: Arrived
in Orlando, FL
SUNDAY
- AUGUST 13, 2000
Well, today was my first
day off in a while. I was bored. I went for a walk this morning and
my tennis shoes fell apart on me. They’re only 6 years old, but
I didn’t pay much for them. I stopped at the Dollar Store (which
was actually my original destination) and bought another pair (only
$10). I took Kira for a walk this evening and she took another swim
in the lake. She sure can swim! Otherwise, most of my day was spent
reading and writing my Klingon RPG postings on-line.
I sure will be glad to
get that first paycheck! (August 31st).
Old Diary – 1976: I saw
an “Art Grindle” commercial on TV while in my motel room
at the Palms Motel in Winter Park. This would be meaningful to me in
20 years! “I want to sell YOU a car!” ... quoth he!
MONDAY
- AUGUST 14, 2000
Typical day... went to
work, came home, walked Kira, and sat in front of the computer all evening!
Jack made a pasta/salmon salad which was delicious! I ate it for supper.
I was going to go to the store, but when I stepped outside I saw the
bus already stopped across the street. It would be a half hour before
the next one and I didn’t want to wait. I’ll go tomorrow…
maybe.
Oh... I sent a letter
out to Chad. I sent it 2-3 days ago. Hope he got it ok. I will have
to email his mother. Maybe she will be able to let me know that he got
it ok.
SATURDAY
- AUGUST 19, 2000
The last few days have
been pretty standard, boring, go to work, come home, go to bed, get
up & do it over again. I think is was Thursday night that I took
time to watch a movie I had rented from Block Buster... “The Bicentennial
Man” <I probably spelled that wrong>. This was the movie
based on Isaac Asimov’s novel, starring Robin Williams as “Andrew”
the android. It was very well done.
Today I was able to break the monotony a little. I took the bus over
to the Galleria Mall. I walked from there down to “Pet Smart”
and looked around. That is a BIG pet store, and people are walking around
the store with their dogs. I want to take Kira, but I don’t know
how I can get her over there, since I don’t have a car. Hmmm.
Then I walked back to the Mall and ate (across the street) at the KFC
(that cost $8.00!). I went back over to the Mall and caught the 5pm
showing of “Bless the Child.” It wasn’t as good as
I had hoped. It was ‘OK’ but ... well ... see it if you’re
bored.
SUNDAY
- AUGUST 20, 2000
Didn’t do much
today. I took Kira for a walk. This time we went down along Lindell
Street. There is a beautiful section of Forrest Park with benches, flowers,
fountains and the usual well tended lawns under Great Oaks. Kira loves
it... so do I.
I finished watching my
soaps this morning... trying to keep caught up on the weekly monotony.
Kehlhyr is moving the posts from the Bloodwine Bar to a new site today.
Don’t know where the new site is yet.
MONDAY
- AUGUST 21, 2000
I was very homesick today.
I miss my house, my car and Thor. I wish I knew what happened to him.
Is he still alive? This is so cruel to leave me hanging like this.
I came home and put on
my roller skates for the first time since 1993.... a year before the
accident. I took Kira for a walk. The first hard part was getting down
the stairs. Next time I WILL put them on down stairs!! Then, the skates
were scaring her and she tried to run away. (Of course, I was holding
her leash). That made me go faster... which made more noise on the sidewalk,
which scared her more, which made her run faster, which.... we were
caught it a loop. Fortunately, I could turn and brake. Only hit one
tree!
TUESDAY
- AUGUST 22, 2000
Money is getting tight.
My first payday is due next week. Cooked up some potato-chicken stuff
last night that was deLISH.
Oh, my printer started
working again tonight. I had been dead for weeks. I just happened to
turn it on and it works! (Weird…)
I started reading the
7th book in Robert Jordan’s “Wheel of Time” series.
THURSDAY
- AUGUST 24, 2000
Today was Debie R[censored]’s
last day; actually, she will be working on weekends, but for us is was
her last day. Tracy took her out to lunch.
I attended my first monthly
Applix meeting this afternoon (with Tracy). I have been assigned to
load the upgrade on all of our clients in our section.
FRIDAY
- AUGUST 25, 2000
I was by myself much
of the day today at work. I did my first MIR backup all alone. Hope
it went ok.
SATURDAY
- AUGUST 26, 2000
I went to see a movie
at Union Station ... “The Cell.” It had good special affects,
but was a little too “weird” even for me. I have to work
tomorrow from 8-5.
SUNDAY
- AUGUST 27, 2000
I worked today from 8am
to 5pm and everything went smoothly. I only had 2 phone calls. Both
were from the same person. I fixed one and had to page someone for the
other one. I even took the backup tapes to Barnes-Jewish to store in
the off-site safe/vault. This was another first for me.
OLD DIARY – 1985: [Doug
and I] Moved into Georgetown Apartments today.
MONDAY
- AUGUST 28, 2000
Nothing special today.
Payday... COME ON DOWN!
TUESDAY
- AUGUST 29, 2000
Today was a very sad
day. I received an email from Chelsea, the young woman in Tampa who
took Minya, Brandi and Thor. She tells me that Thor has died. I was
appalled at the nasty way she wrote the email. It seemed to be accusing
me of his death and then ended with the comment “...please quit
emailing me.” I checked my record and have only sent her 5 emails
(on which she was the sole recipient). I sent three in June, 1 in July
and 1 in August. There were a few other emails on which she was included
with multiple recipients... maybe 5 or 6. It’s not like I was
sending harassing email or anything. I was very hurt. I didn’t
get to sleep until 4am. Didn’t function very well at work the
next day... but I got through it. I was so sad and still am. He was
my baby and he died all alone at a vet’s office far away. He didn’t
know what was going on. I wanted him to make it until I could come get
him. Now he’s gone. My poor little “Tor-tor”. He brought
much joy to me and Doug and my niece, Devon. May his little soul rest
in peace.
WEDNESDAY
- AUGUST 30, 2000
I was VERY tired at work
today. I didn’t get much sleep last night.
